At several instances it has been learnt that that the employer offer only high cost choices for 401 (k) plans. Onus is certainly on the employees to make it known to the authorities that the offered choices of investment plans have no low cost options.



Generally, the user of plan 401 (k) are charged to types of fees, administration fees are charged universally to every one in the plan and the second is mutual fund management fees that are charged according to the chosen funds.



If some one has an index fund option, it is always better to stay in the employer plan. All index funds are different from each other in terms of the cost. Even within the same mutual fund company some funds have different costs.
