Paying off a single debt is much better than repaying several loans. If over the years you have accumulated several loans then it would be advisable to get them consolidated into a single loan. The various kinds of student loans can be handled depending on whether they were funded originally as federally insured loans or as a private loan based on personal credit. In case you have a federally insured loan then you need to take care of the strict guidelines which statre when and how they can be consolidated.

A federally insured student loan can not be combined with a credit card debt or for that matter any other consumer debt. However in some cases private student loans can be consolidated with federally insured student loans. It would not be advisable to do such a thing as then even the private student loan would fall under the same strict guidelines as the federal loan. So consolidation of a student loan should be done with caution.
