Savings bonds are conservative investment but considerably most secured investment backed by the government. Needless saying these bonds does not fluctuate as other bonds or stocks do in the stock market.
These bonds can be used to strike a balance in the overall investment portfolio having uncertain stocks and other risky investment. But in general when it comes to investment savings bonds are the significantly conservative end of the gamut.
According to the Treasury Department in the year 2005 $ 6.3 billion in savings bonds were sold out, though the figure is a bit low than the previous year when it stood to $ 7.9 billion.
As of now savings bonds take 30 years to reach to maturity when they stop earning interest.
